Astfel am auzit: odata, Fericitul statea in Sāvatthi, in crangul lui Anāthapiṇḍika, din Padurea lui Jeta. Si, cu acea ocazie, Venerabilul Sāriputta, Venerabilul Mahāmogallana, Venerabilul Mahākassapa, Venerabilul Mahākaccāna, Venerabilul Mahākoṭṭhika, Venerabilul Mahākappina, Venerabilul Mahācunda, Venerabilul Anuruddha, Venerabilul Revata si Venerabilul Ananda s-au apropiat de Fericit. Iar Fericitul i-a vazut pe acei venerabili venind de la mare distanta. Vazandu-i, s-a adresat calugarilor [astfel]:
“Iata, calugari, sosesc brahmanii! Iata, calugari, sosesc brahmanii!”
Astfel fiind spus, un anume calugar, brahman prin nastere, i-a spus aceasta Fericitului: “Si, acum, domnule, in ce masura este [cineva] brahman si, apoi, care sunt calitatile care fac [ca cineva sa fie] brahman?“
Atunci, Fericitul, cunoscand aceasta semnificatie, a destainuit, cu acea ocazie, aceasta vorba inspirata:
“Cei care, lepadand calitatile rele, umbla mereu atenti, Trezitii, cu legaturile rupte, acestia [sunt] cu adevarat brahmani in lume!“
